"Measure" your math knowledge!

A big skill in first grade is the introduction of measurement.  Length, height, width, weight, capacity, etc.   We do some work with rulers (inches and centimeters).  We also measure using "non- standard" items like paper clips or blocks.  (Like...How many paper clips long is that piece of paper?)  The kids do need to be able to read a scale that shows how much something weighs.  Also, they need to know about how big a gallon, quart, cup and tablespoon is.  If you have any or all of these types of measuring tools around the house you should spend some time playing with them.  There are ALWAYS measurement questions on our big tests at the end of the year!  Experiencing the measurement will be much more valuable that just talking about it.  Good luck!
